    Summary

The School Safety Grant Program established by SB 310 of the 133rd General Assembly will distribute competitive reimbursement grants to individual K-12 public schools for various safety updates such as cameras, panic buttons, automatic door locks, and visitor badging systems. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (”Commission”) in coordination with the division of Ohio Homeland Security of the Department of Public Safety is authorized to make competitive grant awards to public schools for eligible security improvements that assist the schools to improve the overall security and safety of their buildings.

Eligible security improvements (Eligible Work”) means:

    1. a physical security enhancement, equipment, or inspection and screening equipment included on the Authorized Equipment List published by the United States Department of Homeland Security that is also within the definition of "costs of capital facilities" under section 151.01 of the Revised Code
    2. reasonable professional design services required to complete/accomplish the project
    3. reasonable installation and labor

    History of Funding

A list of awardees from all 5 rounds of funding is available at:  https://ofcc.ohio.gov/Portals/0/SSGP-Award-Lists-R1-R5_1.pdf

    Additional Information

Schools will need to apply for the grant, and as part of the application process, will go through a "vulnerability assessment" conducted by local law enforcement, military, or experienced security. This vulnerability assessment will identify any areas of improvement that schools can apply for security upgrades for.

For instance, if an assessment states a school needs more parking lot lights, the building will be more likely to be approved for funding if they ask for dollars to improve lighting versus if the school asked for funding for video cameras or other items.
