Grantmaking is the primary strategy used by Welfare Foundation in its philanthropic work. Traditionally, the Welfare Foundation has primarily focused on capital grants (but not endowments) in the the following seven nonprofit sub-sectors:

Eligible applicants are non profit organizations. The geographic focus area for the Foundation is the state of Delaware and southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Regarding the latter, Welfare has adopted the United Way of Southern Chester County's map, which specifically identifies the included townships and zip codes.
Applications are to be submitted by April 15 and October 15, annually.
Award amounts vary. The foundation will award approximately $5,000,000 in grants each year.
