Projects serving the following populations are of special interest:
The foundation supports basic biomedical research on aging relevant to understanding lifespan development processes and age-related diseases and disabilities. The foundation particularly wishes to stimulate new, creative research that might not be funded by traditional sources or that is often under-funded in the U.S.
Grants to Individuals Program
Research grants to U.S. nonprofit institutions and universities on behalf of investigators to study the basic biology of aging.
?Infrastructure Awards
The program supports the establishment of community-wide resources that will benefit a broad segment of researchers in the areas of programmatic interest to the foundation. Examples include the development of reagent repositories, scientific databases, new model systems, or new experimental methodologies. Although nonrenewable, these awards provide an opportunity to develop and implement a new resource; ongoing long-term support, if required, must be identified from other funding sources. In order to maximize the number of research grants given to individual investigators, the foundation is not currently accepting unsolicited proposals for infrastructure awards.
New Scholar Award in Aging
The objective of the foundation's New Scholars Award is to support new investigators of outstanding promise in the basic biological sciences relevant to understanding aging processes and age-related diseases and disabilities. The award is intended to provide significant support to new investigators to permit them to become established in the field of aging. The New Scholars Award provides up to $100,000 per year for a four year period for successful candidates. The foundation announced that no new applications will be accepted for New Scholar awards in Aging. All currently funded awards will continue subject to the terms and conditions established in the original award agreement between the foundation and the grantee institution.
Senior Scholar Award in Aging
The program is designed to support established investigators working at institutions in the U.S. to conduct research in the basic biological sciences relevant to understanding lifespan development processes and age-related diseases and disabilities. The award is intended to provide significant support to allow the development of novel, innovative research programs by investigators who are not currently conducting aging research or who wish to develop new research programs in aging. The foundation particularly aims to stimulate new research that has rigorous scientific foundations but is not funded adequately, either because of its perceived novelty, its high risk, or because it is from an area where traditional research interests absorb most funding. Senior Scholar awards provide funding up to $150,000 per year for a four-year period. The foundation announced that no new applications will be accepted for Senior Scholar awards in Aging. All currently funded awards will continue subject to the terms and conditions established in the original award agreement between the foundation and the grantee institution.
Training Awards
The foundation supports a limited number of institutional training programs, through universities, professional societies, government institutions, or other non-profit organizations by invitation only. These programs are intended to reach younger scientists, still in graduate or post-doctoral training, to nurture their interest in developing careers in aging research. Applications are not accepted.
The Lawrence Ellison Foundation has given a total of $30,347,622 in grants in 2016. Recent awardees include: National Philanthropic Trust and Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
