    Summary

The purpose of this funding is to advance and evaluate state-level prevention for opioid overuse, misuse, abuse, and overdose in states with higher burden of drug deaths. The program advance a two-tiered strategy to allow for the fact that the needs of states vary considerably. Some states need support to build their ability to collect, analyze, and apply data and develop a strategy to combat the epidemic. These states may apply for the Planning and Data (P&D) base component alone. Other states need resources and support to implement a comprehensive prevention program. These states may apply for both the Planning and Data component and the Prevention in Action (enhanced) component. States choosing the Planning and Data (base) component are expected to improve their data collection and analysis around the epidemic and work with their communities to develop a strategy for building a larger, more comprehensive program in the future,States choosing the advanced Prevention in Action (enhanced) component are expected to implement a prevention program and impact the behaviors driving prescription opioid dependence and abuse, and ultimately reduce the negative heath consequences (e.g., ED visits, overdose deaths) associated with prescription drug abuse.

    Additional Information

To provide states resources and support to address prescription drug abuse and overdose. The goal of this program is to reach high burden states that are not funded under CDC's Prevention for States program, regardless of their current progress on efforts to address the epidemic—this program will meet states where they are. The base component, the Planning and Data Component (P&D), will provide all awardees with support to build and enhance their efforts (1) to track and understand the behavior of the epidemic and (2) to work with their communities to develop and implement a multi-sector prevention plan. The enhanced component, the Prevention in Action (PIA) Component, will aid states ready to implement prevention interventions.

Applicants must propose at least one activity under strategy 1 or 2, but applicants may advance up to four priority strategies under this funding.
    • 1. Enhance and maximize a state PDMP
    • 2. Implement insurer and healthcare interventions at the community or systems level
    • 3. Policy Evaluation
    • 4. Rapid Response Projects
