    Summary

    The Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to Nebraska fire departments in cities or communities with a population under 10,000. The primary objectives of the program are saving lives and protecting property in rural areas.

    Commonly purchased items in the VFA program are: protective clothing, communications equipment, fire prevention items, slip-on units, pumps, hose, nozzles, folding tanks and SCBA.  A community project to provide smoke detectors for rural residences may also qualify.

    Additional Information

    Grant funding for fire hall construction or the purchase of new fire trucks, town sirens, or EMS/rescue equipment supplies are not eligible. Purchases made prior to project approval do not qualify for funding.

    Eligible applicants are Nebraska volunteer fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less. 

    Deadline Details

    Applications open annually, in April.

    Award Details

    Individual awards vary, with a maximum amount of $5,000. Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required.
