The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust seeks to enrich the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest by providing grants and enrichment programs to non-profit organizations that seek to strengthen the region's educational, spiritual, and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways.

Under General Grants, there are three areas of interest to the Trust, which are:
About half of all of the general grants awarded are for capital projects, and the other half are for program initiation, expansion, or for increased organizational capacity. General Scientific Research Grants: The Trust prefers projects and programs in the natural sciences whose main objective is the acquisition of new knowledge. Training students in conducting research is an important consideration. Guidelines are available at: http://www.murdock-trust.org/how-to-apply/general-scientific-research-grants.asp. Formal Program Grants in Science: The Trust has initiated five formal grants programs in the sciences. Procedures vary for applying to one or another of the formal program grants, and interested organizations should review these programs as well for specific details. Guidelines are available at: http://www.murdock-trust.org/grants/formal-program-grants-science.asp.
Previous grants awarded are available at: http://www.murdock-trust.org/grants/grants-awarded.php.

Organizations which have been ruled to be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and which are not private foundations are eligible. Charitable organizations applying for support must have in hand such IRS documentation of status. Priority is given to projects and programs conducted by qualified organizations within Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Applications from individuals or sponsored organizations will not be considered. Individuals acting on behalf of, but without the authority of, qualified tax-exempt organizations are ineligible. Please consult the application guidelines for detailed information concerning eligibility and restrictions.
There are no deadlines for submission of the letter of inquiry to the Trust. If your proposed project appears to be eligible for Trust consideration, you will be sent a letter encouraging an application. Complete instructions are available here: http://www.murdock-trust.org/how-to-apply/general-grants-letter-inquiry.asp
Grant award size varies depending upon organization and project; however, past practices inform future decisions. Because the Trust's application and evaluation process is rigorous, thorough, and time intensive, requests for less than $50,000 are generally discouraged.
