    Summary

    Through Focused Funding initiatives, Bright Promises Foundation directs resources to innovative programs that address a critical emerging issue faced by at-risk children. The Foundation provides capacity-building tools throughout a multi-year funding cycle while also striving to increase awareness and resources to address these issues.

    To determine where Bright Promises should focus their support, The Foundation convenes an impressive community of leaders from diverse fields and backgrounds in the child-serving community including health, education, youth development, and social work. Based on the recommendations of these experts, Bright Promises selects a single emerging issue that greatly impacts at-risk children in Illinois and is currently under-recognized and underfunded. The Foundation changes or adds a focus every 4 to 6 years to ensure they are always addressing the emerging needs of vulnerable children.

    The Bright Promises Foundation (BPF) is currently accepting applications from child (0-18) or parent-serving non-profit organizations seeking funding to support the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) of children by teaching parents and caregivers to intentionally promote social and emotional intelligence, development and character at home. 2017 is the second year of the SEL at Home grant program. BPF will make grants to first-time recipients through 2019 and renewal grants for 2 additional years.

    BPF WILL CONSIDER REQUESTS FROM ORGANIZATIONS OR PROGRAMS THAT:
    • Currently provide parent engagement or education using evidence-based SEL programming (including home visiting) to expand to new locations or serve more families;
    • Would like to improve or formalize the use of SEL throughout their already existing parent education/engagement programming;
    • Provide direct services to children between the ages of 0-18 where SEL is a core part* of the mission, regardless of the service provided, and that do not have formalized parent engagement programs but would like to. Examples include after school programs, arts programs, STEM programs, athletic programs, mentoring or internship programs, etc.

    History of Funding

    From 2008 - 2012, BPF funded programs that decreased childhood obesity and improved health outcomes for low-income and other at-risk children. From 2012 - 2017, the Funding Focus has been on promoting resilience in children who have experienced traumatic stress.

    Additional Information

    BPF will not fund:
    • Proposals from individual schools. School districts that have 5 schools or less may apply as can external organizations that work in schools;
    • General operating requests;
    • Programs that occur outside of the Metropolitan Chicago Area except for rare exceptions. National organizations can only apply if the funded program occurs within our area of geographic focus;
    • Organizations that do not have 501(c)3 IRS designated nonprofit status unless there is a fiscal agent;
    • Organizations that do not have a strong track record of promoting children's well-being as a core part of their mission or that have a philosophy that does that not align with the principles for which BPF stands;
    • Programs that are oriented around a specific religion or religious teachings. Religious organizations may apply if the program for which funding is being sought is not religious in nature;
    • Organizations that discriminate based on race, religion, ability, gender or sexual orientation. Programs that serve a specific gender will be considered.
