    The Schumann Fund for New Jersey advances ideas and opportunities to empower low-income children, families, and communities of color to thrive. They invest in non-profit organizations rooted in Essex County and statewide that work to advance racial and economic equity. Schumann Fund program priorities fall into three categories:

    • Affordable homes & healthy communities: Foster affordable homes, economic mobility, and healthy, resilient communities for children and families.
    • Early childhood & education: Support low-income children and families of color to thrive through opportunities in early childhood development and youth education.
    • Child welfare & youth justice: Advance reforms in systems affecting children and youth, such as the child welfare, juvenile justice, and immigration systems, to support racial equity and youth justice.

    Additional Information

    In reviewing grant proposals, the Schumann Fund for New Jersey gives special consideration to those that:

    • Offer the hope of permanent and positive change in the way that our society addresses the need for quality education and social services;
    • Demonstrate the capacity to make effective use of all available private and public resources for support;
    • Make efforts to collaborate with other groups providing similar programs or services;
    • Indicate a high level of time and/or money contributed from the group to be served;
    • And describe a clear strategy for meeting program goals and an effective means of evaluating progress toward those goals.

  • Eligibility Details

    Giving primarily is limited to nonprofit organizations in New Jersey with special interest in Essex County. Direct service grantmaking is limited to Essex County. Public policy grantmaking is made statewide.

    Deadline Details

    Full proposal applications should be submitted by the following deadlines: January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15, annually.


    The Schumann Fund Board of Trustees meets quarterly in March, June, September, and December to review and act on proposals. Following quarterly board meetings, organizations will be notified of the status of all requests.

    Award Details

    Award amounts vary based scope and size of project. Awards range from $500 to $50,000.
