    Summary

    The Columbia Foundation was established in 1969 by James W. Rouse in order to promote life-long philanthropic endeavors for the benefit of people, programs, and organizations in Howard County, Maryland. The Foundation awards grants in the following priority areas:

    1. Human Services: support for initiatives addressed towards alcohol/substance abuse, child/family services, chronic diseases, crisis intervention, disability, rehabilitation, domestic violence, care for the elderly, finance and legal assistance, health and wellness, hospice care, homeless shelters; mental health, and transportation;
    2. Arts and Culture: support for initiatives addressed towards arts education, therapy, dance, instrumental, performing art, poetry, theater, and vocal arts; and
    3. Education and Community Affairs: support for initiatives addressed towards civic education, community development, cultural heritage, economic development, education for all grade levels, environmental issues, historic preservation, and sports and leisure.

    The Foundation will award grants in these areas through

    1. project,
    2. operational,
    3. contingency, and
    4. organizational grants.

    Deadline Details

    Operational grants are due the first Friday in September each year. Project grants are due the first Friday in February each year.
