    Sunderland Foundation

The Sunderland Foundation was established in 1945. For more than seven decades, the Foundation has focused on supporting bricks and mortar projects, awarding grants to nonprofits in the Kansas City region and other areas where the Ash Grove Cement Company does business. The Sunderland Foundation makes grants annually to publicly supported charitable organizations with tax exempt status under section 501 [c] 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation prefers to make grants for capital and special projects rather than for annual operating expenses.

Areas of interest include higher education, churches, youth serving agencies, health facilities, community buildings, museums, civic projects, and low maintenance, energy efficient housing projects sponsored by qualified tax-exempt organizations. In recent grant cycles, the Board of Trustees has awarded the majority of grants in four broadly defined areas:
    • Higher Education
    • Human Services
    • Arts and Culture
    • Health Care and Hospitals

    History of Funding

In 2016, the Foundation awarded more than $4.7 million to more than 45 educational organizations. Grantees included community colleges, private colleges, and public universities. The Foundation awarded $2.9 million to human service nonprofits in 2016, and the majority of grants in this area went to groups that provide essential services to youth and families. Grantees included a range of youth-focused groups, including the Kansas 4-H Foundation, Kids TLC, Ronald McDonald House & Boys & Girls Clubs. Arts and culture projects received $3.6 million in 2016, including grants to the Eisenhower Foundation in Abilene, Kansas; the Kansas City Repertory Theatre; and museum organizations in Missouri and Montana. In 2016, more than $2 million was awarded to hospitals and health-care groups to build and improve their facilities.
