    Summary

    The purpose of the Herb Block Foundation's Pathways Out of Poverty program is to help needy young people and adults in Washington metropolitan area gain a quality education. The Foundation is accepting applications for projects serving youth and focusing on improving student achievement and the healthy development of young people of middle-school age and above. Projects may include in-school and community-based educational programs, after school activities, and mentoring programs. Programs designed to increase high school graduation rates are encouraged to apply.

    For projects serving adults, the Foundation seeks proposals to provide literacy education and GED preparation and to offer vocational training and job placement.

    Grants cannot be used for:

    • Capital or endowment programs;
    • Sectarian religious purposes; or
    • Lobbying or other partisan purposes

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are located in and/or provide services in the greater Washington, DC region (District of Columbia, the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and the city of Alexandria in Virginia and Montgomery, and Prince George's counties in Maryland).

    Deadline Details

    The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent was February 6, 2016. Letters of Intent are required. Successful applicants will be invited to submit applications, which must be submitted by April 20, 2016. Similar deadlines are anticipated annually.

    Award Details

    Awards are expected to range from $5000 to $25,000 and will last for 1 year. No more than 10% of a grant may go to indirect costs (outside of those for general operating support).
